Mathematics

“The Mathematics curriculum focuses on developing increasingly sophisticated and refined mathematical understanding, fluency, reasoning, modelling and problem-solving. These capabilities enable students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by employing mathematics to make informed decisions and solve problems efficiently”

Ref Victorian Curriculum

Our Holy Redeemer has a whole school approach that has a sequence of learning mathematical concepts and builds a common language across the school. The curriculum is organised into the three strands of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability.

Our structure focuses on mental computation strategies and explicit instruction as well as providing opportunities for students to consolidate learning, investigate problem-solving, and provide opportunities for enrichment through mathematical investigations. All students have a Mathletics account that engages students in activities that are aligned with the Victorian Curriculum to develop necessary numeracy capabilities.

In recent years OHR has been involved in a research project with Professor Mike Askew who worked with our teachers and students on Effective Teaching of Mathematical Strategies.

The curriculum is organised into the three strands of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability.

A Mathematics specialist provides intervention in small groups and individually on a needs basis.

Several of our students entered the Maths Talent Quest in 2016 showcasing their understanding of using Mathematics to solve problems and innovate.

The video below shows how the processes are taught.
