It’s the little things we do to support an individualised learning program that get us the big results Our entire teaching staff is dedicated to the detail and we want to ensure every child achieves their own potential. This means ensuring we have a robust system of teaching and support that not only caters to the average (or middle student) – but also the advanced student or the student that needs some extra support. For learning to take place we need to ensure that every child feels safe, happy and confident within themselves – and so a huge emphasis is placed on a strong wellbeing and support program that achieves just that!

At Our Holy Redeemer, we are committed to students building the necessary skills to fully participate and flourish in a changing world. Our English program is structured to support and enhance the development of reading and writing skills through exposure to a rich variety of texts, including books, visual media, and digital stories. We focus on the explicit teaching of reading and writing skills integrating a formal phonics-based spelling program from Prep to Year Six. Progress is closely monitored using both formal and informal assessments, with data shared between teachers ensuring continuity of support and targeted programs that meet each child’s individual needs. We track all students throughout their educational journey at OHR ensuring we plan and deliver instruction to extend every learner. For eligible students, we offer Literacy Intervention — an intensive program in reading, writing, and spelling. This intervention builds skills, knowledge, and confidence, equipping students with strategies for Literacy success. Public Speaking In the 21st Century, being an effective communicator is essential. At Our Holy Redeemer, students have extensive practice in speaking in front of large groups both in the classroom and at assemblies. Our Holy Redeemer promotes public speaking and from the early beginnings of Prep, the children are taught to stand in front of an audience where they speak into a microphone. Every student participates in the annual OHR Public Speaking Competition which culminates in a Grand Final celebration with the whole community. Our senior students also enter the local Rotary Primary Schools Speech Competition and the Kew Future Leaders Speech Competition. We are proud that our students continue to be most successful in both these arenas. House Debating As part of their English learning in Term 4, all students in Year 5/6 participate in a House Debate. The benefits of debating are immense, and can be categorised into 4 areas: Thinking and research skills Communication skills Social skills Sportsmanship Students in the other levels attend these debates in support of their house and this exposure is a valuable asset when it is their turn to debate for their house when they are older.

At Our Holy Redeemer, we take a whole-school approach to mathematics, delivering a structured curriculum that builds consistent understanding across all year levels. The program is organised into key strands: Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, and Statistics and Probability. Experienced teachers use explicit instruction and targeted mental strategies, supporting students through scaffolded and extended learning. Our teaching incorporates interleaved and spaced practices to reinforce key concepts over time. We make maths engaging and relevant by linking concepts to real-life contexts. High-impact teaching strategies are delivered in a supportive, inclusive environment. To cater for all learners, we offer small-group extension and intervention based on classroom observations and assessments. Students also engage in internal and external challenges such as ICAS, AMC, and MAV competitions. A key priority is timely, targeted support. Teachers use frequent check-ins, formative assessments, and whole-school data to guide instruction and meet individual needs. At OHR, we are committed to developing confident, capable, and lifelong learners of Mathematics.

Science At Our Holy Redeemer, all students from Prep to Year 6 enjoy weekly Science lessons with a specialist teacher in our dedicated Science room. The program is built around the four key areas of Biological, Chemical, Earth & Space and Physical sciences, and aims to develop both scientific inquiry skills and an appreciation of science as a human endeavour. Each year, students can extend their learning by taking part in the Science Talent Search, working independently or in pairs on a self-directed project that showcases their creativity, research skills, and scientific understanding. STEM All students participate in a weekly STEM lesson. STEM skills are taught in a dedicated facility, with hands-on, creative lessons that connect learning to real-life contexts. STEM is an approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Through STEM, students develop key skills including: problem solving, creativity, critical analysis, teamwork, independent thinking, initiative, communication and digital literacy.

An exclusive space for the Performing Arts, combined with the skills of a talented and enthusiastic Performing Arts teacher, enables students from Prep - Year 6 to express, represent and communicate their ideas in contemporary, traditional and emerging art forms. They have the opportunity to explore and convey their interpretations through Dance, Drama and Music. In alternate years, every student throughout the school has the opportunity to perform in the biennial school production. The production is a culmination and celebration of the skills the students have learned during their Performing Arts classes.

In the Visual Arts program the students create works that are primarily visual in nature, using mediums such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts, photography, video and filmmaking. Common to the Visual Arts curriculum, are two interrelated principles: Students learn both as artist and viewer Students learn through making and responding. In alternate years the school hosts a Visual Arts show in which students' artwork is showcased and celebrated by family, friends and staff. The Art Show commences with an official evening launch and remains open for viewing over a number of days.

At Our Holy Redeemer, every class enjoys weekly Physical Education lessons where students receive instruction on physical fitness, healthy living, and sports. Lessons focus on developing both physical skills and a positive, active lifestyle. Through funding from the Sporting Schools Program, students also benefit from the expertise of visiting specialist coaches. We are proud to have an ongoing partnership with Deakin University, further enriching our sporting opportunities. Senior students take part in a local Inter-School Sports program and also compete in round robin events such as hockey, AFL 9s, cricket and basketball. As a member of School Sport Victoria, students from Years 3–6 participate in district cross country and athletics days, while the entire school comes together for our annual House Athletics Carnival and House Cross Country. In Term 4, the whole school enjoys a comprehensive swimming program, which concludes with our much-anticipated Swimming Carnival — a celebration of skill, perseverance, and school spirit.

At Our Holy Redeemer School, our Mandarin program provides students with a dynamic and engaging opportunity to explore the Chinese language and culture. The program is designed in alignment with The Victorian Curriculum: Languages 2.0 (Chinese), supporting students to develop their communication skills, intercultural capabilities, and a deep understanding of diversity and cultural perspectives. Through learning Mandarin, students build an appreciation of how culture shapes worldviews and gain insights into their own heritage, values, and identity. They are encouraged to be open to different experiences, think critically and creatively, and develop respect for diversity and difference in an increasingly interconnected world. To make language learning meaningful and enjoyable, students participate in a range of fun and interactive activities, such as: Storytelling using gestures and role-play Songs and games that reinforce vocabulary and tones Art and craft projects inspired by Chinese festivals and traditions Cultural celebrations such as the Lunar New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival Digital learning activities using Blooket and Canva Collaborative tasks, such as setting up breakfast stalls to buy and sell items using Chinese currency Our program is enriched by the Accelerative Integrated Methodology (AIM), a highly effective approach that combines gestural techniques, storytelling, and active participation. AIM supports students to see, hear, speak, and ‘feel’ the language simultaneously, making the learning process both fun and memorable.

Integrated Curriculum Each term our learning and teaching integrates a Gospel Value and a Rich Concept across all learning areas to support and deepen understanding and make connections with the world. Teachers develop focus units to engage our students in relevant, meaningful activities that can be connected to real life. Learning areas include the Humanities (Civics and Citizenship, Economics and Business, Geography and History) and Technologies (Design & Technology and Digital). We also promote Critical and Creative Thinking, Ethical, Intercultural perspectives and Personal & Social capabilities within these units of work.
